First, immigrants need to get a valid passport because many immigration processes, such as employment authorization, are requiring a copy of their passport as proof to get a benefit.
Next, undocumented immigrants need to get a driver’s license if they are legally allowed to do so in their state. These driver’s licenses will stop them from possibly getting convicted or charged for the misdemeanor of aggravated unlicensed driving, which could take away their ability to prove good moral character in removal proceedings.
Third, immigrants need to pay back taxes to get residency in the future; especially since many cases presently in removal are being dismissed, and they may be able to argue Cancellation in the future.
Fourth, immigrants need to not drink and drive because they can be placed in removal proceedings and automatically deported if they have two DWI’s within ten years.
Finally, immigrants need to vacate old criminal convictions, if possible, because changes in the New York criminal laws may now allow some cases to be legally vacated and thereby help their immigration status.
