Perhaps one of the things we most need is to learn to distinguish the useful from the valuable. A corkscrew is helpful. A hug is valuable. A door is useful. Seeing a sunset is valuable. A lighter
is useful. A friendship is something valuable.
Most of the time, what is useful is more expensive than what is valuable. In fact, valuable things rarely cost money. And this happens because money is useful, but it is not valuable. The valuable generates much more happiness in the long term than the useful. And yet we often value the useful more than the valuable.
The best moments in life don't cost money. Seeing a child being born, the first kiss, feeling that you fly from someone's hand… The moments that cross our minds just before leaving this world did not cost money. Those moments are the most valuable thing we have.
When a concern arises, think about whether what you are looking for is useful or valuable. Learn to distinguish, and you will realize that living well is not as expensive as you have been told.
