The Battles for

the Patria Grande

In Latin America, the first battle was political: independence from the Spanish and Portuguese crowns.

Behind this was the United Kingdom and its eagerness to expand its dominion throughout the world. To this end, it fueled internal conflicts across the continent, ultimately dividing it politically. The dream of liberation for the Patria Grande, envisioned by San Martín and Bolívar, was relegated to unequal countries easily susceptible to corruption. “Brothers, be united, that is the first law; because otherwise, you will be devoured by outsiders,” said Martin Fierro, the gaucho payador.

The second battle is economic. Behind this are the United Kingdom and the United States. The former built railroads to transport indigenous resources to major ports. With the industrial growth of the latter came the Monroe Doctrine, which relegated Latin American countries to being the backyard of the new American empire. Always behind them were English and American banks, promoting (buying) governments aligned with their interests and not those of their people.

The third battle is cultural, and it began with the colonization of Latin America, with the dispossession of indigenous peoples and the suppression of their great cultures and societies that did not conform to European culture. Today, this cultural colonization is even more acute due to the complacency to which the world is subjected, lulled by social media and the ever-increasing dependence on the belief that the goal of life is measured in dollars. From political slavery, we have moved to economic and cultural slavery.
