Baroness Staffe:
Her life has been devoted to elevate
domesticity to a gesamkunstwerk.
Unfortunately, Etiquette and Advice Manuals - The Lady’s Dressing
Room is the only book that has been
translated into English. Her bibliography is amongst the most iconic
and precious advices of the beginning of the 20th century on the basic
knowledge of manners and how to
live in a society. This anti-feminism
user guide was implicitly exploring the condition that woman could
radicalize and master social representations from “below” trough a
strategic alienation.
Beistegui (Charles) :
In 1929, the famous tastemaker
Charles Beistegui asked Le Corbusier to build an apartment on
the Champs-Élysées which was not
intended to be inhabited, but only
used as a framework for the holidays. Beistegui created the decoration of the reception rooms and
terraces himself. It entailed baroque
fireplaces, rococo dressers, Napoleon III chairs, statues and Venetian
chandeliers, which contrasted with
the sobriety of corbuséens spaces by
giving the mission to foster extraordinary attendance, as heterogeneous elements of a dream.
