The history of Skye is the
story of mass emigration where
perhaps 40,000 islanders were
evicted from their homes and
involuntarily departed their
island following on from the
crushing defeat of Scottish
nationalism by the English at
the Battle of Culloden in
1746.
The clearances were savagely
carried out by the victorious
English soldiery and their
Scottish allies.
A hundred years later in
1851, my great-grandfather,
Coll Reginald Macdonald was
born on Skye. This is his story
and of how Culloden and its
aftermath almost certainly
influenced his life and attitudes.
