Use of Reflective Practice in Developing Students’ Listening and Ensemble Performing Skills in Guitar Ensemble Co-Curricular Activity Chen Li Yan, Huang Yewei Martin St. Patrick’s School Abstract This research study examines the use of reflective practice as a tool to capture students’ music learning in listening and ensemble performing skills. Students’ perception and views on the role and effectiveness of reflective practice in facilitating their music learning are also explored in this study. Data were collected from these reflection journals, video recordings, and reflective dialogues. The qualitative results revealed that reflective practice creates a platform for students to become more aware, and hence, take greater ownership of their own musical learning. This acquisition and practice of soft skills in reflective practice in music learning are aligned with the development of the 21st Century Competencies and social and emotional competencies for which Singapore schools are equipping our students. Results of the findings carry implications for teachers to explore the approach in infusing and promoting a reflective culture for our students that supports the teaching and learning of these competencies and skills. 35
