Beasts of the Southern Wild's unknown cast wows at box office

I had to watch this movie again to get the full understanding of it. I definitely felt the emotion it was made to convey. Hushpuppy (Quvenzhhane Willis) did indeed carry the movie. It was told in a narrative form from her point of view. The first impression of both Hushpuppy and her father Wink (Dwight Henry) is that they live in the country. They live on an island just outside of Louisiana that they call the Bathtub. She has her own house which is strange to me. She seems to have wisdom that is beyond her years in the first couple of scenes. She knows there is a storm coming and that there is a chance that the world as they know it will change. Hushpuppy also has a keen knowledge, even if through a child’s eyes, of the life that is around her. She describes those heartbeats and the languages of the animals that are unknown to her but she endeavors to be one of them, trying to understand their “codes”. She understands that there is a universe that she is a small part of it. She often screams. I think it is her War cry. A way she can muster strength when she is afraid or doesn’t quite understand something. Hushpuppy got mad at her father when he didn’t seem too interested in her after he had been gone for a few days. She went in her house and found that food she had tried to cook had caught the house on fire. She hid in a box thinking that the box would protect her from the flames, like only a child would. She is taught to be a beast in order to overcome obstacles in her life. When hushpuppy was eating her father told her to beast it. Not to use any silverware or items of luxury she and the children ate right from the floor or on the table. They ripped their food apart like animals. There are many instances of Wink teacher her to be a beast and to be strong in the film. Wink lets her drink alcohol and says to show him her guns. Although hushpuppy has many nicknames he also calls her “man “or “Boss” a lot. I can’t help but to see some similarities to Hushpuppy and Dorothy in the wizard of Oz in this film.

Just like Dorothy she is a little girl trying to understand the world around her. Inventing and imagining as she goes along .she imagines the auroch’s, an extinct creature native to the island is hot on her trail. They get closer to her as the story progresses advancing every time there is conflict in her life. After the storm passes their world is in danger of dying from the saltwater that has flooded the Bathtub. Wink goes to the levy and Hushpuppy pulls the cord, causing an explosion that destroys part of the levy. The water goes down but the people on the other side of the levy came to remove them from the Bathtub and their way of life. When Hushpuppy enters the shelter, it is cold and sterile she describes it as “a fish tank with no water.” Hushpuppy knows something is wrong with Wink but he doesn’t tell her. While they are at the shelter they tell him he needs an operation or he will die. He fights the whole time. He and the other Bathtub residents make a run for it. He tries to put Hushpuppy on a bus to go somewhere else but she gets off and confronts him. Wink doesn’t want her to watch him die, but they all g the Bathtub. It was heart breaking to watch Hushpuppy demand that Wink stop talking about dying. She was so brave for a little girl. She was trying to be tough like he taught her to be

THis is a good movie for the whole family to enjoy .
