A second similarity that Dr. King and Pres. Obama have in their speeches is their view on unity. Dr. King declared that we as african americans cannot walk alone. Dr.King maintained that we should unite with white people , not distrust them ,because our destinies are tied together. He also proposed nonviolent tactics to persuade ,if you will, others to work together. In addition to that he believed that no one would be free unless we all were free. Pres. Obama directly quotes Dr. King’s speech relating to unity. He also states that “we cannot walk alone.” Obama calls for our brother and sisters of America to unite for the common good. Obama belives that america should restore its moral standing as a place where all who want peace, freedom and a better future can come together and strive for that goal. He states”… the idea that we are responsible for ourselves, but that we also rise or fall as a nation, the fundamental belief that I am my brothers keeper and my sister’s keeper.”Pres. Obama stresses uniting the country in all aspects.

A third similarity that Obama and Dr. King share is the american Promise. The definition of the american Promise, the promise we as citizens are all given, is to live our lives freely without persecution. During the time of Dr. Kings speech , African Americans could not pursue happiness without major obstacles. They were segragated in schools and other public places. They were hung from trees, spit on , and beatten horriblely if they didn’t do what predjudice people wanted them to . Sometimes they were met with this hate for no reason at all. Which violated the equality promised by the Emancipation Proclamation. Dr. King despratley wanted to change this, for it was not the American Promise. Pres. Obama explains the American promise as being: “that we can live our lives how we feel is right and be treated with respect.” Today there is still lack of respect for the poor, homeless, and same sex marriages, to name a few. Pres. Obama elaborates on this in is speech stating that people who have same sex marriges should also have the right to be with their loved ones and be treated with respect .He also states he plans to train some of the poor and homless in the jobs he will to provide with his new programs. He declares that it is this american promise that pushes us forward even thought we don’t know what to expect around the corner.

Lastly Obama and Dr. King share interest in change. Both men discuss the fact that we need change and some of the things that need to change. Dr. King wanted to make known that African Americans were not happy with their current state(1963)of living. They wanted certain laws to be changed and sanctions lifted, so they could enjoy their lives freely. Dr. King wanted those who thought that African Americans were infereor and those with predjiduce in their hearts to change their minds. He wanted them to know that if this change did not occur that they would not stop protesting. Some of the changes that Dr. King wanted has happened. Today pres. Obama has things he wants to change as well. He argues that change happens when the people demand new ideas , new leadership and new politics. He wants to change the previous governmental administration and policy. One of the ways he wants to do this is to change taxes, to stimulate our economy. He plans to provide more money for education. He wants to try and make healthcare affordable for everyone. He also plans to invest in renewable forms of energy to help our environment. Pres. Obama states that we need to let go of our older ways to try and evolve as a country.
