Producing over 350 music , theater , dance , spoken word , drum circles , and multi-disciplinary events a year , Ashé believes in art as a paradigm-shifting call to action . As ecosystem builders , they deliver programming and direct services that support , leverage , and celebrate the people , places , and philosophies of the African Diaspora . The grant supported the I Deserve It ! Project , which trains and hires artists as community health workers to address the 25 year difference in life expectancy between black and white New Orleanians . The project demonstrates the potential for intersectional problem-solving and community asset-building . It will : establish a culture-based healing space for community members to gather and engage in lifestyle wellness activities ; train and employ a cadre of artists and culture-bearers as community health workers employed to work directly with residents ; codesign a social marketing campaign promoting solution-based positive health messaging ; provide an equity review of City of New Orleans policies , identifying those which result in disparities experienced by neighborhoods ; and produce a quarterly dashboard and equity toolkit for care providers , as a model for equitable patient-provider interaction . These activities will increase quality of life and life expectancy for vulnerable residents .
