My 50s shoot was inspired by the film Grease, pin up girls, the housewife, diners and fashion photography that has been done in a 50s style. I wanted to create a fun flirty feel so I used a lot of pastel pinks and fun prints in the outfits I chose. I shot it in my kitchen to give a housewife/ diner feel to the video with props like pots and pans and a glass of coke. I chose an upbeat rock n roll song to match the mood I was going for. I wanted to show a clear contrast between the mood of the 30s and 50s shoot.
I think the 50s silhouette is so iconic with the small waist and full skirt and I think this is really where makeup started to gain popularity with the heavy foundation, powder and cat eye that has really influenced today. There are a lot of people who copy the pin up girl look from the 50s today and I think stars of this era like Audrey Hepburn are still relevant fashion icons.
Finally I chose the 90s because I think it is one of the biggest influences on current fashion and there are so many 90s trends that I really love like hoop earrings, slip dresses and crop tops. I have always been a huge fan of 90s R&B and hip hop and I’ve been fascinated by the 90s rave scene. I also had a lot of friends who had 90s style clothing so I thought it would be good to get them involved.
I took inspiration from rave, grunge and hip hop subcultures as they interested me most, as well as sports brands like Tommy Hilfiger, The Spice Girls and Clueless. I wanted my shoot to be styled like a rave so I used blue lighting and glow in the dark face paints and filmed it in a dark room. My outfits mixed and matched elements from rave, grunge and hip hop so there was a good range of styles.
I think the 90s has had a massive influence on today! So many trends in the shops now are taken from the 90s. Dungarees, chokers, mom jeans with black belts, puffa coats and of course the whole athleisure movement which I think has been heavily influenced by rappers of the 90s who wore a lot of sports labels.
Over all I was proud of what I managed to produce in a short amount of time and I think each of the decades are very well represented with the outfits I chose and I used a creative approach to make it more interesting and visually appealing. If I was to do it again I think I could have had a longer section of me talking to show my knowledge of the decades a bit more.
