CH: I started working in the district attorney office in Greenville, NC while studying the bar. I
sent letters and resumes to all district attorneys and the New Bern, NC office called me for an
interview and indicated that they wanted to hire me. As soon as I passed the bar I started working
here and have been here for the last 15 years.
SJ: What helped you with your decision of your career choice?
CH: When I did a criminal law clinic in law school in the clinic I represented people from the
indigent’s office and when representing those people and contacting them to get the facts of their
cases and how they wanted to handle them. None of the people responded to me about their cases
so I wouldn’t see them until they went to their court dates and that made me want to become a
D.A since they didn’t care about their case then why would I. Another thing that helped in my
decision was my law school professor for trail advocacy who was governor Easley’s wife she
told me that she felt as if I was a prosecutor at heart by the way I handle things in class and after
my experience at the law clinic I also knew I could not see myself defending someone who I
truly believed in her heart committed a crime.
SJ: Is being a DA everything you hoped?
CH: I am very happy and satisfied; I enjoy doing everything I do for a living. Not to say that I
