Katelyn Heim The Public ’ s Perception on Private Prisons Private prisons are corporations designed to make a profit rather than treat and rehabilitate offenders . Private prisons reduce costs and increase profit by providing the cheapest daily necessities to prisoners , little or no psychological services and rehabilitation programs , while increasing the cost of making a phone call home or receiving items at the commissary . Due to the high turnover rate , private prisons are understaffed which leads to safety issues and higher risk of violence . The purpose of this study is to see what the public feels about programming for inmates in general and specifically about their thoughts on private prisons .
