Welcome
Louise Martin CBE

Later this year, the eyes of the world will turn
to Glasgow for the Commonwealth Games.
The excitement is certainly building, and
when the first athletes walk into Celtic
Park for the opening ceremony on 23
July 2014, it will undoubtedly be another
defining moment in Scottish sport.
Of course, without the hard work,
determination and belief of coaches
across the country, our athletes
would not be competing in the first
place, and for their dedication, we are
extremely grateful.
I am confident that Glasgow will put
on a show to remember. However, for
sportscotland, the Games themselves are
not just about 11 days of competition.
The UK Coaching Summit 2014
Welcome from
sportscotland’s Chair
It is about using the Games to deliver
a sporting legacy for Scotland by
developing a world-class system for
sport from grass roots to clubs to our
performance athletes – we are already
on track to achieve this goal.
Thank you to sports coach UK, with
whom we have worked to create a
motivating two days of speakers and
workshops. I hope you take as much out
of this year’s Summit as you possibly can
and apply it to your own work.
The theme of this year’s Summit
supports our vision to inspire the next
generation of young athletes through
excellent coaching. Not only can you
inspire young athletes, but you can
also positively influence those coaches
who are just starting their journeys in
sport. You have the power to shape the
future of sport, and it has never been
more important to ensure that our
coaches are the best equipped they
can be at every level.
Once again, welcome to Scotland,
and I hope you enjoy the next couple
of days.
