Special Dedication
With the theme of excellence in mind, we want to commemorate a particularly inspiring faculty member— Saint David’ s Strings Teacher and Philharmonic Ensemble Conductor, Philip Hough, who passed away in March 2026. Hired in 1979 to teach strings, Mr. Hough founded the Philharmonic Ensemble in 1983. Under his direction, the orchestra program advanced to include performances by the boys in such venerable venues as Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall.
Phil’ s colleagues and students will not forget his devotion and kindness. In fact, Lucas Chung’ 26 honored him by painting an extraordinary portrait in the style of Chuck Close for his Αρχω project this year. In an accompanying commentary, Lucas noted how Mr. Hough“ came into every rehearsal with enthusiasm and enjoyed sharing his musical passion with us. He left a tremendous mark and inspired [ each student’ s ] musical journey.”
We dedicate this edition of Obelisk to Mr. Hough.
Lucas C.’ 26,“ Mr. Hough”
