Democracy through My Eyes Lidia-Lithuania Democracy is many things. It is a form of governance, alifestyle, the way towards the result, and more and more things. I mostly experience democracy in school. For example: I vote for the new president of the school; together with class I choose date of a test. I also face democracy at home when with family I choose what to eat, what to do and so on. I think that the key feature of democracy is equality. Democratic equality is when everybody has same rights and responsibilities despite their gender, religion, race, homeland and when community helps the weaker ones who need support, such as the disabled, elderlies, children… Being a Young Citizen The real democracy in my experience was when the whole eTwinning space decided that we should have meetings. As a young citizen, I have the right to have a job, but my responsibility is to attend school, to do to work on time and not to break any rules. As a young citizen, I have to love nature. I can fight against global threats by love of nature. I can plant trees, stop wasting water, protect animals and the environment. At my age, there isn‟t much I can do to be a democratic actor, but I can show my interest in the political actions. We face democracy in our daily lives: at home, outdoors, at school, on social networks. For example, at school, when we discuss with the class where we are going on an excursion, we each make our suggestions and then choose the best offer. My rights and responsibilities as a young citizen are: the right to choose, the duty to study, the right to express my opinion, the right to be free. To be an active citizen of democracy, you must first want to do good deeds, be a visible and active citizen, and follow responsibilities and rules. Viktorija-Lithuania If you want to be active democratic actor, you need to participate in charity events, protests, flashmobs…In short, don‟t miss peaceful, community events where ideas for a better life are suggested.Take an interest in community issues, try to solve them, don‟t be afraid to say what you think. Also foster democratic dialogue. To do it, you need to be polite, understanding, open-minded, patient and tolerant. Keep in mind that all decisions can be correct, don‟t judge them, think twice. Don‟t forget about laws standards of conduct too. Then you can confidently say “I am active democratic actor”. It is also super important to have debating society because if nobody debated, voted or discussed the things, we would live in chaos without any laws and order. There never would exist common solution. We would become a bunch of fighting individuals. This is how I understand Democracy This is how I understand Democracy. 43
