What is Your Contribution Next Year to Protect the Enviroment?
Many underestimate the many small
polluters that lurk in our everyday
lives.
There is, for example, the chemical
cleaner with which many
households clean their kitchen every
day. Sooner or later, all the
chemicals it contains end up in our
groundwater. Even plastic is often
misjudged in its environmental
damage. Whether it's the tomatoes
from the supermarket, multi-packed
"snack packs" or cosmetics - plastic
is found everywhere. This often
ends up in our oceans at some point,
creating huge plastic islands that are
often eaten by marine animals.

The consequence: The animals
die and the plastic is shredded
more and more. So-called
microplastics are already
swimming around the world's
oceans in masses, but that is still a
long way off. This is not really
true, because this microplastics is
eaten by humans, for example
when fish is eaten. A further problem
is that these tiny pieces of
plastic are also used in various
cosmetic products.
Peelings, lipsticks and shower
gels are the main environmental
pests here, because the small
peeling grains are often made of
plastic, which we then carelessly
pass on to the environment
through our discharge.
Even if you eat meat every day,
you indirectly contribute to
environmental pollution, because
global warming is stimulated,
among other things, by the
production of vast quantities of
animal feed.
A final point is the large amount
of waste that is thrown away
without hesitation, which many
26
people dispose of in the
environment. Often these are cans
or bags, small pieces, but
everyone must be aware that
every single piece of plastic
thrown into the environment
causes permanent damage and is a
wasted resource.
What the individual can do
What many people do not (want
to) know: Every individual can
make a contribution to
environmental protection. The
classics here are, of course, less
driving and using public transport,
or even cycling. But there are also
many other things that are a little
less known.
Instead of having to pack the fruit
in a bag every time you go to the
supermarket, you can simply take
an old bag from home or better
yet a jute bag.
Therefore: Do not simply throw
away old plastic bags, but recycle
them. This is the only way to
contain the production of the
bags. The next time it has to be
done quickly and a coffee "to go"
is needed, you can simply bring
your own cup, which is not
thrown away after one single use.
The same applies to anything that
is packed in any way: The cheese
at the market or even the food at
the chip shop. The environment
can also be helped by avoiding
peelings and shower gels with
plastic grains and using natural
cosmetics instead.
Another simple step is to consume
meat consciously, i.e. instead of
eating every day, perhaps only
twice a week. Changing the
electricity or gas supplier can also
be an easy option.
There are now many suppliers
who sell electricity from
renewable energy sources at fair
prices to consumers. A power
strip can also help.
This way all appliances in the
house can be switched off
completely and electricity
consumption is reduced.
