55+ Living Guide Winter 2018 Winter 2018 55+ issue for Joomag | Page 23
If you’d like to report your findings or know what other
people are seeing and where, visit the online database at
e-bird.com or participate in the annual Christmas Bird
Count and Great Backyard Bird Count, which both take
place during the winter.
Do you prefer birding in the company of others?
Several local groups and organizations offer walks,
hikes, field-trips, educational programs and volunteer
opportunities open to adults and children throughout
the year. Some to consider are the local Audubon
chapters which includes the Capital Region Audubon
Society, Southern Adirondack Audubon Society and
the Northern Catskills Audubon Society; the Hudson-
Mohawk Bird Club which is the Capital Region club
of the New York State Ornithological Association; and
the Rensselaer Plateau Alliance which is a conservation
partner focused on the Rensselaer Plateau region. The
Albany Pine Bush Discovery Center, Dyken Pond
Nature Center, Emma Treadwell Thacher Nature Center
and Five Rivers Environmental Education Center also
offer ongoing community programs, birding trips and owl
prowls. Find them each on Facebook or visit our website
at ny.audubon.org for quick links to each as well as a full
list of Audubon events, or tips and trick on birding, gear,
or getting the perfect photograph.
Few things can bring friends and family together like
shared discoveries, making memories, and outdoor
exploration. Whether there is snow on the ground, tulips
blooming, or the bright colors of fall emerging, birding
and birdwatching can offer great inspiration and insight
into the wonderful world of nature that we sometimes
forget about in the hustle and bustle of our daily lives.
Pick a day, invite your friends, plan your trip, pack a bag,
and head out to explore all the Capital Region has to offer.
You won’t be sorry!
If you’re at home or on the road and need help with identifying a bird or song, consider trying a user-friendly app for
guidance. Two free and popular apps are the Audubon Bird Guide and Merlin Bird ID.
