Spotlight on wellbeing | 19
• People in difficult relationships at work will have unmet needs . This may be needing more time or support , for example . Prioritising satisfying those needs is likely to enable a resolution .
• Being open-minded and impartial means that you avoid getting hooked into old negative patterns of thought and behaviour . Learning about new perspectives and experiences can be eye-opening , and can challenge negative beliefs such as ‘ this person is just fundamentally bad ’.
• Take a compassionate , emotionally intelligent , and nuanced approach . Remain empathetic and sensitive to everyone ’ s feelings - including your own . Accept that you may be emotionally overwhelmed and therefore may need to consciously attempt to be more objective .
• Maintaining good relationships with colleagues you find challenging is fundamental to their success . Take the initiative and check in regularly with them to keep relationships on course .
• And , finally , keep positive . Where there is the will and motivation to move forward , there can be permanent and meaningful change - even in the most intractable of relationships .
