SAINT LUCIA
WASN’T ALWAYS
HER NAME
The early
ancestors called her
which means Land of the
Iguanas. The Arawak Indians
called her, Ioüanalao meaning
“there where the iguana is
found” and the Carib Indians
called her Hewanarau, and
later Hewanorra which also
means Land of the Iguanas.
But in the 16th century when
the French settled there, they
called her Sainte-Lucie —
Saint Lucia.
