SAINT LUCIA WAS
FORMED OVER 4
PERIODS OF VOLCANIC
ACTIVITY
28
Formed from volcanic
rock, Saint Lucia is a
volcanic baby.
According to geologists...
First to form was Castries 19 to 9
million years ago from a series of
small volcanoes.
Second to form was the southern
part of the island 6 to 5 million
years ago.
Then, intense volcanic activity
centered in the south central
section around Mount Gimie
connected the northern and
southern sections and built up the
island 2 to 1 million years ago.
As for the Sulphur Springs and
the Pitons, they were formed by
another series of volcanic eruptions
around Soufriere Bay less than 1
million years ago.
While the Windward Islands were
formed from volcanic rock, other
places such as Barbados, Florida,
Cuba, the Bahamas are composed of
coral and sand. Guadeloupe and the
Virgin Islands are a mix of
limestone and volcanic rock.

SAINT LUCIA IS
HOME OF WORLD'S
ONLY DRIVE-IN
VOLCANO
29
The last major
volcanic eruption in
St. Lucia occurred
about 40,000 years ago and is now
dormant. A major tourist attraction,
located in Soufriere, the Sulphur
Springs is the only drive-in volcano
in the world.
Steeped in thousands of years of
tradition, the Sulphur Springs is
believed to provide numerous health
benefits especially for those with
skin conditions. It is said that the
water was sent to Paris 200 years
ago upon which Louis XVI’s doctors
said that it was highly beneficial.
