Disciples Making Disciples
I grew up as the third generation of a family that follows the teachings
of Buddha. I encountered Jesus as a young adult in 2006. At the
beginning of 2017, I started reading books written about Disciple-Making
Movements (DMM).
I was led to pray and started asking God how I could partner with
Him in the harvest and make disciples who make disciples in my own
community. God subsequently arranged for me to meet two coaches
who started coaching me through the various elements of helping harvest
people discover and engage with Him in their own contexts.
During the same year, after my mother had finished chanting at the altar
one day, she saw an evil spirit in one of the bedrooms. This caused her
to question the power and effectiveness of what she had been doing all
her life. The changes my parents saw in my life had also prompted them
to call on God. They decided to get rid of the family altar and left their
Buddhist community.
My parents knew they wanted to follow Jesus but felt dissatisfied and
helpless. Some things in church were hard for them to adjust to, and they
still cared deeply for friends and family members. They didn’t know how
to follow Jesus and stay connected with the community God had raised
them in.
This year I began doing Discovery Bible Studies with my parents. The
dissatisfaction has turned to joy as they love reading the Bible. They feel
they are discovering who God is and how to relate to Him. The discovery
process makes it easy and natural for them to share what they are
learning.
My mother has many siblings, some of whom are still practising Buddha’s
teachings. During their weekly family meals, several sisters have been
showing interest in what my parents are learning about God.
As a family, we continue to seek God and ask Him to show us how we
can best partner with Him where He has placed us, and help those
around us to discover Him.
