Franz Ferdinand of Austia
FIRST WORLD WAR
CAUSES
· World War I was a warlike conflict between 1914 and 1918 that left more than 8 million military deaths and 6 million civilian casualties. It changed all modern war conflicts, making it one of the deadliest in history.
· There were many causes that influenced this conflict. The main cause was the assassination of the heir to the Austro-Hungarian empire: on June 28, 1914, Gavrilo Princip with 5 others from a Serbian nationalist group called the "Black Hand" (Young Bosnia) attacked Francisco Fernando, killing him and his wife. One month later, the Austro-Hungarian Empire declared war on Serbia. After that, Russia mobilized its army and Germany prepared to go to war with it as well.
· The great arms competition also helped the war be produced, so that all the countries wanted the best military technology. A major cause was nationalism. All countries wanted to conquer more
territories and to dominate. This military
competition and military alliances were
the trigger of the great war.
