On June 10th, Michael Bloomberg’s “Everytown for Gun Safety” released data which reported that there has been an average of 1.37 school shooting every week in the U.S. since the Sandyhook shooting in Newtown, Connecticut over a year ago.
According to Everytown there have been a total of 74 school shootings since December 14, 2012. “However, several of the shootings have come under scrutiny as some of them appear to have occurred off-campus and at least one may have been an instance of self-defense,” reports Jason Howerton for the Blaze. I encourage you to read the entirety of Howerton’s article on the Blaze, as he also included some of Johnson’s tweets. If you recognize this story, I posted it to the 2AO Nation Facebook page earlier this month.
Journalist Charles C. Johnson took on the tasking of investigating the data reported by Everytown. Johnson published what he discovered via Twitter @ChuckCJohnson. Johnson discovered that Everytown included violent disputes as well as gang violence as “school shootings”. “It’s not a school shooting when someone goes and shoots a specific person on campus. It’s a shooting that happens to take place at school,” says Johnson.
