Traveling with Your Firearm

The start of summer vacations, family reunions and travel is upon us. You have researched the sites and events, made your hotel reservations and arrangements for pets. The bags are packed and you’re ready to hit the road…or are you? If you, like me, will be traveling with your firearm, you have additional work to do.
Since the start of 2014 there has been seven state changes in reciprocity laws. Example: Delaware no longer honors a Virginia permit/license. So, even if you have traveled the same states in the past, the reciprocity laws may have changed. And it
is not just reciprocity that you have to know. The laws of the state
regarding firearms may have changed. This past legislative
session has seen changes both pro and con for the firearm
owner. It is your responsibility to know the laws in the
states that you will travel to or through. Even if the states
you are traveling to have full reciprocity with your state,
you are subject to the laws
governing firearms of
that state. For example,
my state allows open or
concealed carry and we
have full reciprocity
with Florida. Florida is
conceal carry only, and
by concealed, I mean
completely
concealed. If I travel
to Florida I have to
dramatically alter my
carry habits.
