VIOLA
The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra was devastated by the sudden passing of beloved violist Delmar Stewart , who played his final concert with us in August just hours before his passing . Delmar was a kind , gentle , and graceful presence who will be deeply missed by all who were privileged to work with him . Delmar played a viola he made himself in the BSO and helped a great many BSO string players with their instruments , as well as Baltimore Symphony Musician parents of young string players . Delmar said he loved to make young people enjoy their instruments and want to practice . Our deepest sympathies go out to his family .

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra — and the world — lost a dear friend this summer . It is an undeniable fact that the leadership and philanthropic contributions of the late Harvey “ Bud ” Meyerhoff helped shape our own city of Baltimore and communities on a national and international scale . At the BSO , Bud did far more than carry on the inspirational legacy of his father , the late Joseph Meyerhoff for whom our Baltimore home bears its name ; he continued to push the Orchestra to be an ever more sustainable , innovative , and responsive organization , one that both recognizes and is positioned to address the needs of the broad and diverse community in which it lives and serves .
A longtime member of the BSO ’ s Board of Directors , Bud was later appointed BSO Life Director and served in this honorary capacity until his passing . Together with his first wife , Lyn P . Meyerhoff , Bud arranged for the BSO ’ s historic 1987 tour to Russia during a very precarious time in international relations . Throughout the 1980s and 1990s , Bud made personal gifts and led an intentional approach to the family ’ s grantmaking that continue to resound across the BSO to this day : from the creation of an endowed maintenance fund in the late Joseph Meyerhoff ’ s name to address the building ’ s gradual wear-and-tear , to the endowing of several Orchestra positions , from Music Director to Principal Trumpet , creating a reliable revenue stream to attract and retain the best possible musical talent . And well into the later years of his life , together with his second wife Phyllis , Bud was a constant fixture in Box F Left , and a loyal champion of the BSO ’ s work on and off the concert stage , including educational programs like OrchKids . In 2020 , Bud and Phyllis made an extraordinary personal contribution to the Transformation Fund , helping to spark the extraordinary journey that propelled the BSO through the pandemic and to our new era with incoming Music Director Jonathon Heyward beginning this month .
