from the president

IT IS MY PLEASURE AND HONOR to welcome you to the 2023 – 24 concert season with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra . This season promises to be filled with captivating music , innovative experiences , and our continued commitment to the beautiful world of classical music . With a season packed with a mix of new experiences and beloved traditions , we eagerly anticipate sharing the magic of music with you once more . Our very own , Jonathon Heyward , is the talk of the town ; and we welcomed him to the BSO with full fanfare during our season opening Gala celebrations where the honorable Governor Wes Moore and First Lady Dawn Flythe Moore graciously served as honorary co-chairs . Jonathon began his tenure as Music Director with special performances that featured the world-renowned Dance Theatre of Harlem , and youth from our Baltimore Symphony Youth Orchestras and BSO OrchKids programs . With performances in both of our concert homes , Baltimore ’ s Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall and Bethesda ’ s Music Center at Strathmore , the warm Maryland welcome set the tone for what will be an exhilarating season .

This season also welcomes the return of BSO Fusion , our highest-selling , genre-blending series curated by conductor Steve Hackman . Films played on a big hi-def screen with the score performed live by the Orchestra , including Back to the Future and Star Wars : The Force Awakens . We ’ ll feature extraordinary guest artists who will grace our stage , alongside our Orchestra as well as our own exceptionally talented BSO musicians who will step into the spotlight as featured soloists . And of course , seven weeks featuring Jonathon on the podium ! Each week is an example of what we can look forward to during Jonathon ’ s inaugural tenure : opportunities to listen and learn , exciting artistic partnerships , and inspired performances that bring our community together .
Reflecting on our historic summer season , which marked my first year at the helm of this amazing organization , I am proud of the progress we have made within our community and the broader music world . Our Music for Maryland Tour , expanded to reach eight Maryland counties , bringing the beauty of orchestral music to even more listeners . The groundbreaking AI in A Minor concert showcased our dedication to pushing the boundaries of innovation in music , while the extraordinary generosity of our dear friends Robert E . Meyerhoff and Rheda Becker has enabled us to envision a brighter future for classical music in Baltimore .
None of these achievements would be possible without the unwavering dedication of our generous supporters and donors . Your belief in our mission , your commitment to the power of music , and your passion for the BSO continue to drive us forward .
As we embark on this new season , I am filled with gratitude for the journey we are on together . Thank you for being an essential part of the BSO family .
