The building itselfs
The Schuhmacher ’ s building was built in 1933 at the Kohlplatz in the municipality of Eschen ( Gemeinde Eschen , 1933 ). The builder was the shoemaker Armin Gstöhl , also called the Schuhmacher . First , the house consists of a simple rectangular volume with a pitched roof . The ground floor housed the shoemaker ‘ s workshop , the cellar , and the shoe shop . On the floors above were the living quarters . A few years later , due to a lack of space , further premises were added in the form of a workshop , storage facilities and a stable . The basic shape of the building was now an L-shape . The stable was used to store hay and housed pigs and chickens for self-sufficiency ( M . Ott , personal communication , March 4 , 2021 ). The result was that the building was spatial and functional split in two parts . The front building at the street consisted of the shoe shop and the residential area while the back part housed the cellar , workshops and the stable . The front building and the front garden are regarding to its close location to the street very prestigious , while the functional part of the house is kept more minimalistic . The house also has different levels . The functional part is laid out as a split level , while the stable is on a different level than the residential area . As the daughters grew older , the open loggia on the upper floor was converted into a bathroom . At that time , the garden played an important role and was a multifunctional space . Herb and vegetable beds were used for self-sufficiency , and laundry was dried on the clothesline . In addition , the garden served as a meeting place , recreation area and playground all in one . Due to the south-west orientation , the generous garden is on the sunny side of the house . But not only the garden , but also the shoe shop was a meeting place of important significance . Customers from the Unterland and Switzerland came in and out of the shop and often stayed for a chat after their purchase . The private and the business merge ( M . Ott , personal communication , March 4 , 2021 ).
