County Launches New Radon Mitigation Program( posted September 17, 2025)

, colorless, and odorless radioactive gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States and the number one cause among non‐smokers, our goal is to increase awareness and
. At Brown County
Public Health provide people who live, work, and play in Brown County with the tools they need to protect themselves and their families.
That ' s why we are proud to announce the launch of the new Brown County
Radon Mitigation Program. This initiative helps empower our community to test for radon and assist eligible homeowners with the cost of professional mitigation if elevated levels of the dangerous gas are found. This edition of the Healthy Herald explains how the program works

As Easy as 1, 2, 3 This program is simple, and you can take part by following an easy step‐by‐step process:
1. Get a Free Test Kit: Pick up a limited, free short‐term radon test kit at one of our two Brown
County Public Health locations: the Sophie Beaumont building at 111 N. Jefferson St, Green Bay, WI 54301, or our facility at 2198 Glendale Avenue, Green Bay, WI 54303. You are also free to purchase your own radon test kit or employ a professional radon mitigation company to test your home. 2. Test Your Home: Follow the instructionss to perform a radon test in your home and submit the sample for analysis. 3. Apply for the Mitigation Program: If your test resultss show elevated radon levels( over 4 pCi / L), submit your results and a completed application by January 1, 2026.
In January 2026, whichh is recognized as National
Radon Action Month, 50 homeowners who submitted an eligiblee application will be randomly selected to receive $ 1,000 toward radon mitigation servicess.
The money will be paid directly to a certified radon mitigation company, ensuring it’ s used for the intended public healthh purpose, and the work is done by a qualified professional. Those who are randomly selected for a $ 1,000 payment will be responsible for paying the remainder of the mitigation bill, whatever that amount ends up being.
