SCL Spotlight

A Cannon Project

Hannah Whitfield and Colonel Brandon Shah

SCL Marketing and Communications partnered with Colonel Brandon Shah and the ODU Army ROTC program to create a cobranded design that unites ODU and military identities. Using research, design iterations, and advanced 3D scanning and software, the project came to life through collaboration with student photographer Devin, who assisted in the mockup design phase, and Moses, who supported post-production and the final recap. Partnering with 3 Guns Custom, the team delivered a strong aesthetic and cohesive design that proudly represents both communities. We present: Red, White, and Big Blue. Our cannon, an M101A1 Howitzer— was built in 1941. Over the years it’ s done just about everything: fought in wars, trained Soldiers, and even helped with avalanche control. It’ s had a long, busy life.
Bringing it to ODU was a two-year project with help from a lot of people across the university and the Army. Working with SCL, Army ROTC brought it back to life and turned it into what we honestly think is the best cannon in college football. It’ s not just loud— it’ s a symbol of the blend between military culture and ODU tradition, with a patriotic design that reflects Hampton Roads’ huge military footprint.
This year was its first season on the field— and ODU football went 9 – 3 in the regular season. Some might say the cannon is already our good-luck charm. It even made it to national TV when ESPN SportsCenter host Matt Barrie fired it live on air. Not many schools can say their cannon has a national broadcast debut— ours can.
