Meet Atautchikun Program Manager Ruth Aakatailak Moto
We are pleased to share that Ruth Aakatailak Moto, a NANA shareholder originally from Deering, has joined NANA as program manager of our public benefit company, Atautchikun.
Ruth is the daughter of the late Calvin Moto Sr. of Candle and Deering and Betty A. Cheney of Akron, Ohio. Family is one of Ruth’ s greatest joys. She is the proud mother of eight children: Calvin II, Rebecca, Christopher, Gilford, Robert, Anthony, Autumn and Matthew. Her son, Matthew, is currently serving on active duty in the U. S. Marine Corps. She also has more than 30 grandchildren, most of whom live in Deering. Having a large family in the region makes the work Ruth does especially meaningful.
In her role as program manager for Atautchikun’ s TBCP II grant, she helps guide the day-to-day work needed to move this project forward. This includes coordinating partners, facilitating community meetings and listening sessions, tracking progress, and supporting implementation across the region. Her work helps ensure the grant stays aligned with its goals while advancing reliable broadband access, stronger community connectivity, and new opportunities for shareholders and our region.
Ruth says her commitment to hard work and service comes from the many Elders, teachers, and regional leaders who influenced her throughout her life. She credits her father as one of her greatest inspirations. For much of her childhood, Calvin raised four children as a single parent. Ruth and her family spent summers in Kotzebue while he worked in several roles for NANA, including as a chef at the Nullaġvik, managing the fish processing plant and helping with the reindeer herds. He also served on the NANA board of directors in the 1980s. As Ruth began raising a family of her own, her father continued to support her by caring for her children while she worked.
For Ruth, working at NANA is another opportunity to continue a lifelong commitment to serving others. Her favorite part of her role is knowing she is doing the best she can to help our people and the communities she cares deeply about.
Quyanaq, Ruth, for your dedication to our people and for the work you do to support NANA shareholders and communities.
