EDINA
COMMUNITY GUIDE 2026
First responders stand at the ready
Edina can rest easy knowing that there is a dedicated team of first responders ready to spring into action – day or night, rain or shine, every day of the week.
By working around the clock to protect Edina residents, the Edina Police Department plays an essential role in helping the city maintain its reputation as a safe place to live.
Led by Chief Todd Milburn, the Edina Police Department is constantly adapting and evolving to stay on top of public safety issues, working with community leaders and implementing new programs such as its Alternative Response Team, a pilot safety program created in response to a growing need for on-demand social services.
A partnership between Edina, Richfield and Hennepin County, the Alternative Response Team kicked off in June 2024 and offers more solutions for those facing mental health emergencies. If an officer, firefighter or paramedic responds to a mental health crisis call, they can request the new team to help handle the situation, providing more resources to those in crisis.
The department works diligently to ensure citizen and community safety. To build relationships with residents and prevent crime, the police department has officers specifically assigned to various Edina housing complexes and neighborhoods. The Neighborhood Engagement Officer Program has officers engaged in regular, ongoing contact with high-density housing complexes, senior housing complexes and traditional neighborhoods to develop relationships with residents and to effectively exchange information with neighborhoods and areas of higher calls for service.
Chief Milburn oversees 54 sworn officers and a total of 75 employees including civilian staff. There are 43 men and women in the patrol division, which watches over the city streets and highways across Edina’ s 16 square miles.
Housed in the Edina City Hall, the 25,000-square-foot police station includes a state-of-the-art 911 communications center, where a team of dispatchers work 24 / 7 to help keep residents safe from harm and respond to emergencies. Each year, Edina officers respond to approximately 48,000 calls for service and make approximately 1,000 arrests.
With 91 % of surveyed residents rating the city’ s police services as“ excellent” or“ good,” it is no wonder Edina has a reputation as one of the safest places to live in the metro area.
