New fire station will help keep all safe

The Edina Fire Department is an active and committed team whose mission is to serve the community by protecting lives, property and the environment in a safe, efficient and professional manner.
From extinguishing fires, to structural collapse rescues and hazardous material responses, the Edina Fire Department is at the ready all day, every day.
The department is headed by Fire Chief Andrew Slama. Other department leadership includes a fire marshal, a training and safety chief, an operations chief, two fire inspectors and seven fire captains.
In addition to putting out fires, the department looks to prevent them in the first place. The fire prevention division employs fire inspectors who can often be seen promoting fire safety through presentations in classrooms.
The Fire Department also enforces the state fire code by regularly inspecting the city’ s commercial buildings and multi-family housing units, checking for working fire alarms, sprinklers and more.
To meet the growing safety needs of residents, the city replaced its Fire Station No. 2 with a $ 47.3 million project that blends firefighting with public health work.
Fire Station 2 houses apparatus bays, work spaces and living quarters for the firefighters who will be spending nights and days there. First responders have access to dormitories, a living room, kitchen, dining room, day room and wellness room. The other section is home to public health offices and community spaces.
The most eye-catching feature of the new fire station is the five-story training tower. The tower is designed for multiple training opportunities, including technical rescue, live fire training, stairwell drills and high-rise fire scenarios.
The new 33,578-square-foot fire station officially opened its doors in fall 2025. Replacing Fire Station No. 2, which had no ability to expand, ensures that the city’ s fire department is able to meet increasing service demands and continue to provide quick and reliable responses.
