Wings of the North: Honoring Aviation History
Wings of the North— a nonprofit organization founded in February 1998 to share Minnesota’ s aviation history— reopened its air museum in 2023 after a two-year hiatus.
In October 2023, the nonprofit welcomed visitors into a new, smaller location near Gate H at Flying Cloud Airport. Previously, the museum operated for nearly six years in a larger building at the airport.
The museum currently houses four aircraft: a Boeing N2S- 1 Stearman flown by former President George H. W. Bush while he was in Minneapolis for Navy training in 1943; a BT- 15 Valiant used as a basic training aircraft for the U. S. Army Air Forces; an L-19A Bird Dog that served in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War before it retired from military service in 1974; and a T-28 Trojan. The museum also features a full-size replica of the Spirit of St. Louis, which was formerly located at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport.
Wings of the North is searching for a permanent, larger location at Flying Cloud Airport, a project that will likely require raising more than $ 1 million.
Wings of the North will host the AirFair scheduled for Saturday, July 11, 2026. The one-day show will be held rain or shine. In celebration of the United States Semiquincentennial( the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence), the fair will showcase a wide variety of aircraft on the south side of Flying Cloud Airport.
