Heritage Village
Fairgoers can visit thefree Dakota City Heritage Village, a 1900s outdoor museum that comes alive during the fair.
Connected to the fairgrounds, the village offers a relaxing, shady venue and a stroll back in time. Fairgoers can tour 22 historic buildings that stood at one time in towns and villages in Dakota County. The village represents what a typical Minnesota town was like in the early 1900s.
The nonprofit village’ s mission is to connect current generations and learn about the life and agricultural heritage from the early 20th century through its educational programs.
The village will offer fairgoers daily entertainment that includes the 1
p. m. tractor parade, live music on village porches and under the bandstand, along with events hosted inside Ahlberg Hall Museum.
Fairgoers can cool off with lemonade, sweet corn on a stick, indulge in scoops of old-fashioned ice cream or a meal from the village’ s General Store. Music is often playing near the gazebo or in the old-fashioned country church.
The Dakota Garage, a vintage race car museum, will be open daily inside Dakota City and the volunteers are planning activities designed for children.
The museum, led by the International Motor Contest Association, is one of the oldest racing organizations and reportedly the first sanctioning body in the United States.
The museum showcases motorsports memorabilia and a vast collection of
motorsports artifacts from Minnesota and across the Midwest. Fairgoers can chat with race car museum volunteers who love to share racing stories.
Fairgoers can see vintage racing videos, see old photographs and flip through scrapbooks. The museum houses trophies, helmets and racing suits, and showcases promotional items from local and regional race tracks across Minnesota.
