The Conduent HCI Mental Health Index( MHI) identifies the downtown Reno ZIP code 89501 as having the highest mental health concern in the county( MHI = 95.7), indicating exceptionally high mental health challenges relative to both county and national norms. Surrounding ZIP codes 89502, 89512, 89431, and 89503 also show elevated MHI values.
Health Equity Implications
American Indian / Alaska Native( AIAN) residents experience particularly severe mental health disparities. AIAN high school students were more likely than their peers to report non-suicidal self-injury and suicide plans. AIAN adults were nearly twice as likely as the general population to report 14 or more days of poor mental health.
Across focus groups, key informant interviews, and the community survey, mental health was consistently identified as one of the most urgent community health concerns, particularly for youth and families. Participants described insufficient therapists, counselors, and support groups; reactive rather than preventive systems; rising substance use; and limited crisis intervention capacity.
Renown Health and NNPH have made targeted investments in the behavioral health response system that directly address the gaps identified through primary data collection. Current community assets in this area include the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, mobile crisis teams, Renown Crisis Care Center, and Code Phoenix, an anonymity-preserving pathway for individuals in mental health crisis. These investments reflect a coordinated systems response to the surge in youth and adult mental health need identified throughout the 2026 CHNA process. Focus group participants emphasized that demand for general mental health services, including therapists, counselors, sobriety programs, group therapy, and support groups, continues to exceed available capacity for both youth and adults.
