The value of a baccalaureate nursing education grounded in a liberal arts education is explained. The historical evolution, values and legal parameters of the nursing profession are discussed. The heritage of the Sisters of Mercy within a liberal arts education is described. Selected concepts of caring, communication, cultural competence and the nursing process are introduced.
