From Struggle to Strength

Rhonda Liddell’ s Story

As a 100 % disabled veteran and adaptive athlete, I’ ve found a new lease on life through the power of sports. Introduced to World TEAM ' s Face of America: Gettysburg in 2019 by my friend Gina Utteg, I’ ve since completed the ride five times, with only a brief hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Each year, I eagerly anticipate this event, which has become a cornerstone of my adaptive sports journey. Riding my recumbent trike has transformed from a struggle into what I fondly call my“ meditation / medication.”
Through cycling, I’ ve not only strengthened my body but also rejuvenated my mind and soul. The Face of America ride has provided me with a supportive team, friends, and mentors who offer invaluable advice for life and healthy goal-setting.
Each year, I return to the Gettysburg ride stronger than before. I proudly recall completing the entire first leg of the Day One ride under my own power during my last participation.
Cycling has been the catalyst for my involvement in other adaptive sports. I’ m now a para-skeleton athlete, a snowboarder, and I even play one-armed golf. I recently completed a 54-mile ride with 3,100 feet of elevation gain at 6,900 feet in Park City, Utah, and aspire to do week-long endurance rides.
My journey is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of sports.
