A tradition of excellence in education
The Stillwater Area Public Schools District, as the oldest school district in the state, has a long and proud tradition of high expectations and outstanding achievement.
District students consistently rank high on state and national tests, and most graduates will attend a two- to four-year college. Many students are exceptional musicians and accomplished athletes, often winning state and national competitions.
The district is updating their curriculum so it continues to meet and exceed state and federal standards, and it offers unique programs to inspire and motivate its more than 8,000 students.
After meeting with experts, they’ ve decided to switch the school start times of the upper and primary schools, so the

high school starts later and elementary earlier, to better align with the biological cycles of students.
The district is in the process of replacing its two oldest elementary schools, Lake Elmo and Andersen, both of which are over 100 years old and are at or near their maximum student capacity.
Stretching 30 miles along the St. Croix River, ISD 834 serves the communities of Afton, Bayport, Baytown Township, Grant, Hugo, Lake Elmo, Lakeland, Lakeland Shores, Lake St. Croix Beach, Marine on St. Croix, May Township, Oak Park Heights, St. Mary’ s Point, Stillwater, Stillwater Township, West Lakeland Township, and Woodbury.
