As one of the original nine counties in Minnesota, Washington County has a long history of serving its residents.
The county spans 423 square miles of land and encompasses 468 lakes of 10 acres or more in area. More than 267,000 citizens reside in Washington County.
The government center in Stillwater offers a variety of services. In addition to keeping records and providing taxpayer services, the center provides public health and environmental services, community services and veterans services. It houses the offices of the sheriff, county attorney, and county assessor.
The county offers programs related to adoption, aging, child care or support, chemical dependency, developmental disabilities, employment or financial assistance, medical assistance, and mental health. The county is currently building an emergency housing facility for those needing extra help to get back on their feet.
The board of commissioners, made up of a commissioner representing each of the county’ s five districts, meets at the government center at 9 a. m. most Tuesdays.
