‘ The Urban Hometown’ has a lot to offer
Richfield is minutes from the epicenter of Minneapolis, and it is known to many as“ The Urban Hometown” thanks to its small town sensibility.
Richfield officially became a city in 1908, with town meetings dating back to 1858. The city has a population of about 39,000 living inside its seven square miles. Richfield is full of vibrant diversity and yet continues to retain its friendly, small-town feel.
Richfield borders the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and is a short distance from the Mall of America, providing an ease of access that appeals to many residents and developers. Interstate 35W runs north-south through Richfield, Highway 77 forms its eastern border and Interstate 494 anchors the south border. The city continues to work on infrastructure and utility improvements that enhance the quality of life for all residents and visitors. Keeping pedestrians and cyclists safe has always been a top priority for the city, with recent reductions in local speed limits furthering that effort.
People find diversion in the city’ s parks, totaling more than 450 acres and within walking distance of most households.
Activities in the city include hiking, fishing, biking, gardening, mini golf and skateboarding. When recreation leads to an appetite, the city has about 40 restaurants from which to choose, along with plenty of small businesses and retail amenities. When it’ s time for visitors to rest after experiencing the city’ s multitude of offerings, Richfield is home to three hotels, each located conveniently off I-494.
Richfield is governed by a five-member city council which typically meets twice a month at the Richfield Municipal Center. In addition, nine boards and commissions help to guide program and policy decisions for the city. The Richfield Municipal Center includes the city’ s police station and one of its fire stations, as well as a passport office and limited motor vehicle services, administrative offices and public conference rooms.
