Whiz Bang Days takes the cake for grand celebrations
Robbinsdale celebrates four days of summer in an epic series of events. Hotdog eating contests, car shows, softball tournaments, bingo, trivia and a big parade are just some of the activities one expects from the city.
The whole thing was named from a last-century publishing company’ s humor magazine titled‘ Whiz Bang.’ Every year, the historical society brings out posters of the sometimes salacious, old-timey covers.
There are fireworks and garden tours. Many businesses and organizations will add their events to the lists and a few people try to make it to everything.
Another big feature of Whiz Bang Days is the ambassador program. Royalty consists of young folks ages 5 to 22 years who are dedicated to representing the city and making connections. Ambassadors will volunteer, be in the parade, answer questions and meet with people. Outside of the week in July, ambassadors will travel to other festivals around the state. A coronation ceremony in the park acknowledges these people with applause and crowns. Many people have been named“ Miss Robbinsdale,” though the committee is open to a“ Mister Robbinsdale,” if a young male were interested in that role.
