Fire departments respond at a moment’ s notice

The residents of Crystal, New Hope, Golden Valley and Robbinsdale all rely on the dedication and professionalism of fire department personnel to keep them safe from fire, natural hazards and other dangerous situations.
The West Metro Fire-Rescue District is a joint fire department between Crystal and New Hope. It serves the 11 square miles of the two cities. The district was created in 1998 and employs over 60 firefighters, most of whom are paid-on-call.
West Metro’ s jurisdiction protects critical infrastructure of the state, including limited access highways, three rail lines with about 30 trains daily, a major underground petroleum pipeline and Crystal Airport. Its jurisdiction also includes an underground water reservoir that is a vital component of the Tri-City Water Commission.
West Metro has three fire stations and an administrative / operational staff. West Metro provides fire prevention with code enforcement, fire investigation, fire suppression, emergency medical care, vehicle extrication, water and ice rescue, hazardous materials response and mitigation, airport crashfire-rescue and emergency management.
This past year, West Metro Fire Relief has worked at community events like the Crystal Frolics beer tent and Father’ s Day Fly-in as well as advertising through social media a new initiative. They are hoping to get as many residents as possible to sign up for Smart911, an app that disseminates emergency notifications and more. For more information, visit wmfrd. org. The Robbinsdale Fire Department was organized in 1909. The department is a paid-on-call department with a staff of 30 firefighters. The station is at 4104 Hubbard Ave. N., and shares a building with the Robbinsdale Police Department.
The department answers calls for structure, grass and vehicle fires, crash extrication, hazardous material spills, fire and carbon monoxide alarms, emergency medical services, natural gas and smoke smells, plus water emergencies. For more information, visit robbinsdalemn. com / services / fire.
