SEMIKHAH CEREMONY
Candidates for ordination have completed their courses and practical field work requirements, passed comprehensive examinations, and written a thesis. One member of their Beit Din, called a Somekh( et), will place hands on the candidates in the ancient ritual of Semikhah( ordination). Rabbi Robert Scheinberg, representing AJR, will charge the ordinees. This sacred moment will be highlighted by the recitation of the Priestly Benediction by Rabbi Matthew Goldstone and Cantor Michael Kasper. Dr. Ora Horn Prouser will introduce each ordinee with a few remarks. Each ordinee will then be introduced and formally presented to community, family, and friends as clergy. Individually, they will come forward to receive their Semikhah documents from the Academy for Jewish Religion. They will then share teachings, music, and thoughts on this occasion.
