METROPOLITAN WASHINGTON AIRPORTS AUTHORITY
Safety and Security
Human Trafficking Awareness
The Airports Authority is actively engaged in the global effort to combat human traffi cking. In 2025, we hosted an annual training event which invites Airports Authority team members, airlines, rental car companies, hotels, concessionaires, Traveler’ s Aid International volunteers and the traveling public. Attendees learned from experts how to identify and combat human traffi cking in aviation.
The event hosted Airports Authority leadership, United Airlines, the U. S. Department of Transportation and the U. S. Department of Homeland Security. During the event, the Airports Authority received the U. S. Department of Transportation’ s second-place award for making an impact.
In 2025, ongoing investments in training, technology and coordination strengthened the Authority’ s ability to respond effectively in high-pressure situations. First responders are equipped with advanced medical tools and receive rigorous, ongoing training in emergency medical care, CPR and the use of automated external defi brillators. Public safety personnel also train across specialized disciplines, ensuring readiness for complex and evolving scenarios.
Our teams are ready at a moment’ s notice, and that readiness is built through constant training, strong coordination and a shared commitment to protecting others. Every response refl ects the dedication, professionalism and care our public safety personnel bring to serving millions of travelers each year.

The Airports Authority’ s 911 Communications Center remains a critical hub, connecting travelers, employees and fi rst responders to ensure swift, seamless coordination during emergencies. This integrated approach allows teams to quickly assess situations, deploy the right resources and deliver timely care when it matters most.
This commitment to preparedness was demonstrated during a January 29 aircraft accident near Reagan National. The Airports Authority’ s fi rst responders acted immediately to stabilize the situation and ensure the safety of all the responding agencies. This effort was recognized during the investigation with an offi cial fi nding in the fi nal report from the NTSB:
“ Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority aircraft rescue and fi refi ghting and airport operations staff responded immediately and in accordance with applicable emergency plans and regulatory requirements, deploying land and water-based resources, and coordinating mutual aid under complex nighttime and on water conditions.”( Midair Collision Over the Potomac River, Washington, DC, January 29, 2025 – page 291)
The fi rst responders’ professionalism, coordination and decisive action refl ect the highest standards of public service and the deep dedication they bring to protecting others every day.
