Anticipating a More Electrified Future
The Airports Authority is proactively preparing the infrastructure at Dulles International and Reagan National Airports for a more electrifi ed and energy-intensive future, one defi ned by the rapid growth of electric vehicles, electrifi ed ground support equipment and emerging aviation technologies. Central to this effort is the development of comprehensive electrical master plans for Reagan National Airport( completed in 2024) and Dulles International Airport( completed in 2025). These plans assess existing electrical capacity, forecast demand through 2045 and identify infrastructure upgrades needed to support future airport development, fl eet electrifi cation and next-generation technologies, such as electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft.
To strengthen this planning effort, the Airports Authority enlisted the National Laboratory of the Rockies( NCR) to independently validate the electrical master plans and perform a comprehensive gap analysis. The NCR’ s evaluation provided an additional layer of technical rigor, helping identify opportunities, risks and strategic priorities for phased infrastructure investments.
As part of this collaboration, the NCR reviewed the updated airport layout plan at Dulles International Airport to identify areas capable of supporting emerging energy systems and next-generation aircraft technologies. This integrated planning approach ensures future development is reactive to demand and strategically positioned to enable innovation and long-term resilience.
