Dulles Solar Energy Facility Update
The development of one of the world’ s largest airport-located solar and battery storage facilities at Dulles International Airport moved forward in 2025, in partnership with Dominion Energy. Located on approximately 835 acres of underutilized airport property, the project will deliver up to 100 megawatts of renewable energy capacity – enough to power more than 37,000 homes at peak output. The project includes a 50-megawatt battery energy storage system that can be deployed when the grid needs it most. The project has supported more than 300 jobs and generated over $ 200 million in economic activity for Loudoun County, Virginia, and the surrounding region.
Construction activities progressed ahead of schedule in 2025, with completion of major components including racking systems, solar module installation, underground cabling, pile installation and substation energization. The solar energy facility is advancing into system commissioning. Final testing activities, including electrical performance verifi cation and site stabilization, are underway as the project approaches anticipated completion in summer 2026.
Through a fi rst-of-its-kind lease agreement, Dominion is providing the Airports Authority with in-kind contributions that advance renewable energy and vehicle fl eet electrifi cation goals. Dominion has provided a fl eet of 50 electric vehicles deployed to Dulles International and Reagan National Airports based on vehicle replacement schedules, along with 56 electric vehicle chargers installed across DCA, IAD and the Authority’ s Crystal City headquarters in Arlington, Virginia. Additionally, 18 electric buses and associated charging infrastructure are anticipated by late 2027, with the construction of two 1-megawatt solar carports at Dulles expected to begin in spring 2027.
