A new Southdale Library awaits
Edina is fortunate to have two Hennepin County Libraries in two prime locations. The Edina Library and Southdale Library provide multimedia resources, career help, informational forums and of course, plenty of books to read.
Regardless of your taste, the city’ s libraries have what you’ re looking for. With the help of the city’ s knowledgeable librarians, residents have access to a great pool of digital and print resources at their fingertips.
No matter the day, you can find a friendly face at the local libraries.
The Edina Library is located near Highway 100 and Edina City Hall in the city’ s Grandview District. In 2017, the library was remodeled to construct an enclosed reading room, an automated book drop and a larger children’ s area with interactive learning parts. Alongside a wide selection of publications by local authors, the library also boasts collections in Chinese, French and Spanish. The Edina Library is open seven days a week.
Across town is the Southdale Library, one of the largest Hennepin County libraries, located near Southdale Center on Edina’ s eastern border.
The Southdale Library closed at the beginning of 2025 as Hennepin County works to replace the building, which was originally built in 1971.
In addition to providing high-quality resources and reading material, the new library will provide outdoor learning spaces, wetland trails, a public transportation hub, an outdoor library of native plants, a childrens zone, an outdoor kiln area and planted terraces on roof decks.
The new library will also be the new home of Edina’ s Art Center.
Construction of the new library is scheduled to finish in 2027. In the meantime, the library’ s collection( 179,000 books!) has been moved to an offsite storage facility. While the collection will be closed to the public, materials will remain accessible through the holds process. The collection, which will continue to evolve over the next two years, will return for public browsing before you know it.
