Maintaining safety across the city
Members of the Eden Prairie Police and Fire Departments remain devoted to keeping the city safe.
More than 100 staff and volunteers of the police department serve a 36-square-mile city and answer more than 45,000 calls for service every year. The station is made up of three divisions: patrol, investigations and support, all of which play a pivotal role in the department’ s success.
The Patrol Division is made up of several patrol units as well as the secondary Airport, K-9, Crime Tech, Field Training, Reserves, Retail Crime, Traffic, SWAT and Unmanned Aerial Systems units. The Investigations Division consists of the Criminal Investigations, Domestic Abuse Response Team, Explorers, Law Enforcement Analyst, School Liaison, Community Liaison, Chaplain and Special Investigations unit. The Support Division consists of the Records, Dispatch, Professional Development, Support Operations, Community Service Officer, Animal Control, Licensing and Code Enforcement units.
Something new and upcoming is the replacement of the station’ s mobile command center thanks to more than $ 900,000 in federal funding. The current Eden Prairie Police Department mobile command center, which looks like a large mobile home, is at least 25 years old. The new command center will provide both a technological upgrade and a larger space for officers to work. The police department is also set to get some revamping after construction and remodeling were announced to begin in the spring of 2025.
The mission of the Eden Prairie Fire Department is to lead and strive to minimize risk, increase safety, and improve the quality of life in the community through education, code compliance and emergency response. The Fire Department responds to more than 3,200 fire suppression calls per year and is made up of four captains, 12 lieutenants and 77 parttime duty crew with four stations citywide.
The Building Inspections Division issues more than 7,000 building permits each year, and through a process of more than 10,000 inspections, oversees over $ 195 million in development projects annually. The Fire Prevention Division consists of four fire prevention specialists who inspect businesses, daycares and rental units across the city, and provide fire safety education for schools, businesses and residents. The Operations Division oversees the maintenance and programming of handheld radios around the city, manages the city’ s radio tower, provides support to the joint Police and Fire dispatch center and provides security systems to more than 20 city-operated facilities. The Emergency Management Division oversees the city’ s Community Emergency Response Team made up of community volunteers who are trained in disaster preparedness, as well as the city’ s Smart911 emergency notification system, which provides high-speed telephone calling and text messaging directly to homes, businesses and mobile phone users.
The police and fire departments provide several programs, services and community events each year, including car seat safety inspections, Safety Camp, the citywide open house and the annual Night to Unite celebration.
