Program Description: The Biology program at Gwynedd Mercy University is an integrated course of study with a strong emphasis on molecular and cellular biology, genetics, and biochemistry. GMercyU’ s biology students gain a broad foundation in the physical sciences, with required coursework in chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Students who graduate from the program automatically earn a minor in chemistry with their degree. The program provides training in modern laboratory skills, utilizing current technology that is applicable to research in a graduate program and in demand by biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. All students in the biology program must complete a research experience, providing practical, hands-on experiential training that is critical for future employment or graduate studies.
Graduates from the biology program possess the knowledge and skills to succeed in graduate or professional( medical, dental, veterinary, physician assistant, physical therapy, etc.) school or in employment in a variety of fields, and our students are employed or in a graduate program within a year of graduation.
Students may opt to pursue a concentration within the Biology program in pre-dentistry, pre-medical, pre-physician assistant, or pre-physical therapy. If a student chooses to pursue a concentration, they may do so after they have been accepted into the Biology program and have completed their freshman year of study.
The biology program offers the opportunity for students to complete a Master’ s in Education as part of a 4 + 1 program. Students must declare their intent to pursue the 4 + 1 prior to their senior year; they will complete credits toward the MS in their senior year.
