Soaring Together Spring 2024 Edition
A Day of Discovery for Prince George ' s County High School Students
The Social Impact team , in collaboration with the IAD firefighters , hosted a Firefighter Exploration Tour for high school students from Prince George ' s County Public Schools . A total of 41 students from Charles Herbert Flowers and Gwynn Park High Schools gained firsthand experience of the daily duties of an airport firefighter and had the opportunity to interact with members of the MWAA Fire Department at Dulles .
After a hearty welcome , students toured Fire Station 302 and were introduced to tools and apparatuses specific to the airport , such as the crash truck , which holds 3,000 gallons of water or 400 gallons of foam .
Led by Deputy Fire Chief Jason Graber and Amine Moussa , Talent Acquisition Manager , the students learned valuable insights into MWAA ' s firefighter recruitment process . Throughout the discussion , the facilitators provided invaluable perspectives , highlighting the numerous benefits and opportunities available to those interested in joining the MWAA firefighting team .
The group then made their way to the firefighter training facility , where they were treated to a demonstration showcasing the simulated ignition of an airplane and the response of the MWAA crash truck as it extinguished the flames .
Small Business University
The Airports Authority recognized 20 graduates of its Small Business University Executive Certificate Program at Reagan National Airport on Thursday . The certificate program is offered in partnership with local universities to help small and minority-owned businesses compete more effectively for airport contracts . This year ’ s partner is Howard University .
The program is another way the Airports Authority continues to expand its outreach programs in local communities to increase awareness of the Authority ’ s business and employment opportunities . Other examples include recent job fairs and career expos , where representatives of our Operations , Engineering , Concessions and Public Safety teams , spoke with prospective employees with a particular focus on students looking to start their careers . The Authority also sponsors programs to better educate local companies about business opportunities and how to pursue them .
Congratulations to all of this year ' s graduates !
